It is well known that optimal health requires eating fresh fruit, vegetables, protein and whole grains, and avoiding foods that contribute to clogging of the arteries. In addition, diet can also boost your libido – even with foods you probably already have at home.
1. For both of you: spinach
Spinach is an excellent source of magnesium, which Japanese researchers believe helps dilate blood vessels. Because it improves blood flow throughout the body, it makes it easier for women to reach orgasm and for men to get stronger erections.
2. For both: blueberries
Dietary fibre, which is found in blueberries, paves the way for cholesterol to pass through the digestive tract before it starts choking the arteries. Blueberries are particularly beneficial for men, as they contain substances which, even otherwise, speed up blood flow and therefore have a natural viagra effect.
3. For both: pine nuts
Like shrimps, pine nuts are full of zinc, which boosts testosterone and sex drive. So make a pesto, mix them into pasta or add them to eggs.
4. For both: apples
Apples are full of an antioxidant called quercetin, which prolongs stamina in bed in men. But they are also good for women because they are high in phytoestrogens, substances that increase pleasure during intercourse.
5. For both: oysters
Oysters are one of the best-known aphrodisiacs. Like pine nuts and shrimps, they are full of zinc, which stimulates libido.
6. For both: dark chocolate
Even if it’s considered a vice, chocolate with 70% cocoa or more is actually quite healthy, as it’s full of antioxidants that are great for fighting stress and boosting mood. Dark chocolate also relaxes the arteries, boosting blood circulation and thus libido.
7. For both: ginger
Scientists claim that as little as one teaspoon of ginger a week can make arteries more functional, meaning blood can more easily reach all the right parts of the body. Enjoy it in smoothies and don’t forget it with sushi.
8. For both: bananas
High sodium levels impair blood flow and consequently reduce sex drive. The best way to reduce these levels without making major changes to your diet is to increase your intake of potassium, which these yellow fruits have in abundance.
9. For both: sweet potatoes
Like bananas, sweet potatoes are a good source of potassium. As well as boosting your sex drive, regular consumption of this favourite type of potato will also make you look better, as it reduces bloating caused by too much sodium intake.
10. For both of you: canned tuna
A Harvard study found that vitamin B12 deficiency reduces libido, causes chronic fatigue and, in men, erectile dysfunction. Canned tuna is among the top five sources of this vitamin.
11. For both: spicy chillies
Whether jalapeño or habanero, chillies are an excellent source of capsaicin, which replicates the sensation of arousal (sweating, increased heart rate, etc.) to the point where it becomes real. Just make sure you wash your hands well after eating hot chillies.
12. For both: garlic
Regular consumption of garlic prevents the build-up of plaque in the arteries and thus improves blood flow. It was used as a ceremonial aphrodisiac by the ancient Egyptians.
13. For both: avocados
This popular food is an excellent source of B vitamins, especially vitamin B12, as well as healthy monounsaturated fats. All of these help to improve blood circulation and therefore libido.
14. For both: crab salad
Prawns are full of zinc and green leafy vegetables are high in folate. The combination of these substances raises testosterone levels and consequently libido.
15. For both: oatmeal
Oats produce a chemical that releases testosterone into the blood, which increases sex drive and the power of orgasm. You can also mix in some honey for more effect (more on this in the next point).
16. For both of you: honey
The B vitamins found in honey help to produce testosterone, and pine helps the body use oestrogen, which is a key factor in adequate blood flow and arousal.
17. For her: red wine
Scientists claim that the ideal amount of red wine to maximise its immediate effects is two glasses. Drinking more than this will not increase the effects, in fact in some cases it may even reduce them.
18. For her: beef
For couples, one of the main reasons for less frequent sex is tiredness. Chronic fatigue is – especially in women – caused by a lack of iron in the blood. Increase your haemoglobin levels by eating red meat, especially beef. If possible, eat meat from proven sources and grass-fed animals, as this contains less dangerous fats and more of the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.
19. For him: citrus fruits
Men who consume at least 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C a day have a higher sperm count, and the vitamin also prevents sperm from building up, making them more likely to reach their destination.
